Generational Health: Why Grandparents and Teens Train Together

From 16 to 76, we all need the same movements. Jeremy Reilly shares a personal story about his boys and why generational health is our greatest legacy.

If you walked into my living room on a rainy Sunday afternoon, you might expect to see my two boys—now five and seven—glued to a screen or lost in a digital world. But that is a rare sight in our house. Instead, there is a recurring scene that always makes me stop and smile. I'll often hear them in the other room, but they aren't just "playing" in the traditional sense. They are creating "workouts." They'll set up a course of cushions and toys, grab some light objects to use as "barbells," and start a full-blown competition.

They've observed me training since the day they were born. For them, movement, sweating, and challenging yourself isn't something "Daddy does to lose weight" or a chore that adults have to suffer through to stay healthy. It is a natural, vibrant, and joyful part of being a human being. They love coming to the box, and they thrive in our CrossFit Kids classes, but the real magic is seeing it bleed into their unsupervised play. They have undergone an Identity Shift before they've even finished primary school. They don't just "exercise"; they see themselves as athletes.

This personal experience is exactly why I am so passionate about the "Family Focus" at CrossFit Chiltern. We aren't just a gym for individuals; we are a hub for generational health. We are building an environment where the "character" you play as a parent or grandparent directly influences the script your children will write for their own lives.

Generational health family fitness habits: The Needs of the Individual: Degree, Not Kind

If you look at our whiteboard on a Friday evening in Amersham, you might see a 17-year-old rugby player training in the lane next to a 65-year-old grandparent. To an outsider, this looks impossible. How can a teenager chasing elite performance and a retiree chasing long-term independence be doing the same workout?

The answer lies in one of the core principles of the CrossFit methodology: The needs of the individual differ by degree, not kind. Whether you are 16 or 76, your biological requirements for a high quality of life are remarkably similar. You both need to be able to pick things up from the floor (The Deadlift), put things safely onto a high shelf (The Press), and get yourself up off the floor or out of a chair (The Squat).

The "kind" of movement—the functional pattern—is identical because those are the patterns of human survival. The only thing that changes is the "degree"—the load on the bar, the volume of reps, and the relative intensity of the effort. By training these same movements across generations, we aren't just getting people fit; we are standardising the language of health for the whole family. When a teenager sees their grandmother master a kettlebell deadlift, it changes their perspective on what "ageing" looks like.

The Power of the Pack: Social Contagion

We often talk about "social contagion" in the box—the idea that habits, work ethic, and mindsets are contagious within a group. This is never more apparent than when families train together. When a child sees their parent struggle through a difficult workout, perhaps fail a rep, but then take a three-second reset and try again, they are learning a lesson in resilience that no textbook or screen could ever provide.

Conversely, when an older member sees the energy and fearlessness of the teenagers in the box, it often reignites their own competitive spark. At CrossFit Chiltern, we have husbands judging wives during the Open, parents hitting the 9:30 AM class after the school run, and friendships that span three generations. This connection is what makes our community "Chiltern Strong." We aren't just working out in silos; we are building a Support System that makes consistency inevitable.

Ignite Corner: Dr. Amy George on Generational Habits

To sustain this generational legacy, the movement in the box must be supported by the lifestyle at home. This is where our Ignite Nutrition Programme becomes essential. Dr. Amy George, our Nutrition and Lifestyle coach heading up our Ignite Programme, understands that health is a team sport.

Amy often highlights the "Support Systems" pillar of our Ignite framework. She knows that the single biggest predictor of an individual's long-term success is the environment they live in. Through the Ignite programme, we help families rewrite their biological stories together. We focus on the "Whole Food Standard" and "Protein Anchors" not just for the athlete, but for the whole household.

As Amy says, "The greatest gift you can give your children isn't a lecture on health; it's the observation of your own commitment to it." When kids see their parents prioritising sleep over late-night screens, managing stress through movement, and fuelling with real food, it becomes their default setting for life.

Your 5-Year Family Legacy

I want you to look ahead five years. Imagine a family gathering in 2031. Are you the version of the family that is energetic, capable, and ready for an afternoon hike in the Chiltern Hills? Or are you the version that is restricted by "niggles," low energy, and a lack of physical confidence?

The difference is decided today. By joining a community that values longevity and performance, you are making a deposit into a "Legacy Bank" that will pay dividends for your children and your children's children. My boys don't need to be told to be active; they chose it because they saw it as the most exciting part of their day.

At CrossFit Chiltern, we are proving that the barbell is the ultimate tool for connection. Whether you are chasing a competitive score on the global leaderboard or just the ability to play a game of tag in the park without getting winded, we are all on the same team. We are building a community where health is the heritage we pass down. Let's lead by example.
