Mastering the Kip Swing Part 5: The Huge Lever
Most people fail the first rep because they start poorly. Our coaches will show you how to jump from behind the bar into a massive lever.
We have reached the final piece of the gymnastics puzzle. You have the shapes, you have the strict strength, and you have the rhythm. Now, our team needs to show you how to actually start a set. Most people fail their first pull-up or muscle-up in the Open because they don't know how to begin the movement with momentum. They jump directly under the bar, hang like a dead weight, and then try to start a swing from a standstill. This is an "energy leak" that will cost you reps when you’re tired during "Friday Night Lights." Understanding how to start a kip swing for pull ups is crucial for success. Learning how to start a kip swing for pull ups can significantly improve your performance. By mastering this technique, you will be well on your way to achieving your goals.
In Part 5, we are going to teach you the Jump to Hollow to Huge Lever. This is the secret weapon for getting over the bar with maximum efficiency.
Learning how to start a kip swing for pull ups will enhance your technique and efficiency, ensuring you're ready for the next level of performance in your workouts.
Once you master how to start a kip swing for pull ups, you'll find that your overall strength and technique will greatly improve.
The Setup: The Arms Length Rule
The first mistake happens before you even leave the ground. Don't stand directly under the pull-up bar. I want you to stand approximately an arms length behind the bar. This creates an angle of approach. When you jump from behind the bar, you are already creating horizontal momentum that we can "harvest" and turn into vertical height. Standing back also forces you to jump into the bar, rather than just reaching up for it.
The Mechanics of the Start
- The Jump to Hollow: As you jump forward toward the bar, I want you to rise immediately into that Stage 4 Hollow position we practiced on the floor. Because you jumped from behind the bar, your body will naturally want to swing forward.
- The Drive to Arch: As you pass under the bar, use that momentum to drive into your Arch. This is where you "load the spring." Remember to fight through any thoracic limitations here by using your hips and shoulders to find that extension.
- The Huge Lever: This is the most important part. As you snap back out of the arch into the hollow, I want you to press hard into a huge lever.
Elevating the Shoulders
When I say "Huge Lever," I mean pushing the bar down toward your hips with straight arms as hard as you possibly can. I want to see you elevating your shoulders as high as possible. You should feel like you are trying to look over the bar while your arms are still perfectly straight. This isn't a pull; it's a massive, intentional press.
By levering the bar this aggressively, you move your body back and up simultaneously. Mastering the lever means you aren't just pulling your chin to the bar with your biceps; you are moving your entire body around the bar using your lats. It turns a difficult strength movement into a physics movement. I tell my athletes: don't pull the bar to you; push the bar to the floor.
The Final Prep: You Are Ready
The Open begins this week. You have the roadmap our team has laid out for you. But remember: we use the kip to move faster because we can move strictly. It is a tool for volume, not a shortcut for strength.
- Use the Hollow for tension and compression.
- Navigate your Arch with awareness of your T-spine.
- Start your strict transitions from a Pencil Hang.
- Use the Beat Swing for rhythm.
- Start an arms length back for the Huge Lever.
