Mitochondrial Health: The Engine Room of Your Cells

Share

If you feel chronically tired, "foggy," or like your energy levels crater by mid-afternoon, you don't have a caffeine deficiency. You have a mitochondrial bottleneck. Your Mitochondria are the microscopic power plants found in nearly every cell of your body. Their sole job is to take the oxygen you breathe and the food you eat and convert them into ATP—the chemical energy that allows your heart to beat, your brain to think, and your muscles to lift.

At CrossFit Chiltern, we view mitochondrial health as the ultimate foundation of your vitality. If your cellular engines are sluggish or few in number, you will feel "old" regardless of your actual age. To move the needle on your long-term health, we use a specific two-pronged training approach to build more mitochondria and make your existing ones more powerful.

Biogenesis vs. Mitophagy

The first way we upgrade your system is through Biogenesis—literally the creation of new power plants. This happens during steady-state, conversational movement like hiking or Zone 2 cardio. The second prong is Intensity. When you push toward your "Red Line," you force your cells to perform Mitophagy. This is a biological "quality control" process where your body identifies weak, damaged, or "leaky" mitochondria and breaks them down to be recycled.

By regularly exposing your system to intensity, you’re clearing out the crappy mitochondria! You are left with a smaller number of highly efficient, high-output power plants. This is why you often feel a mental clarity after a difficult session; you have literally upgraded the efficiency of your cells. You cannot build a high-performance system on a foundation of cellular inflammation.
