Mental Resilience in CrossFit: The "Next Rep" Reset
A bad shot or a bad rep doesn't have to mean a bad day. Learn the 3-second reset used by pros to stay calm and stay in the game.
Before I was a CrossFit coach and gym owner, I spent years in a very different professional arena: the golf course. As a former golf professional, I learned early on that the sport is played primarily between the ears. You can have the most beautiful swing in the world, but if you don't have the mental tools to handle a bad shot, you will never see success at a high level.
In golf, you hit a shot into the woods, and you have about four minutes of walking to dwell on it before you have to hit the next one. If you carry the frustration of that "bad shot" into your next swing, you've already lost the hole. CrossFit is exactly the same, just at a much higher heart rate. Whether it's a missed rep, a "no-rep" from a judge, or a trip on a jump rope, your ability to reset is what determines your result. At CrossFit Chiltern, we call this the "Next Rep" Reset.
Lessons from the Green: The Reset is Integral
In my golf days, I saw incredibly talented players crumble because they couldn't let go of the past. They would hit a "duff," and their next three shots would be a panicked attempt to "make up" for the error. They were playing the last shot, not the current one.
We see the same thing during a high-intensity session in Amersham. An athlete misses a snatch or loses their rhythm on toes-to-bar, and you can see the visible shift in their body language. Their shoulders slump, their breathing becomes erratic, and they rush back into the movement with a red-misted brain. They aren't training anymore; they are reacting.
Success in both golf and CrossFit is built on the same foundation: the "Next Rep" is the only thing that matters. The rep you just missed is historical data. The reps you have left are in the future. By mastering the 3-second reset, you move from "emotional" mode back into "operator" mode.
The 3-Second Protocol
When you hit a wall mid-WOD or experience a setback, I want you to use this specific 3-second protocol to down-regulate your system and refocus. This is the exact same mental discipline I used on the course, adapted for the intensity of the box.
1. Physical Disconnect (1 Second)
The moment a rep goes wrong or you feel yourself "red-lining," you must physically disconnect from the stressor. If you're at the pull-up bar, let go and step back. If you have a barbell, drop it and take a step away. In golf, we'd put the club back in the bag. This small physical distance signals to your brain that the "threat" is momentarily paused. It breaks the loop of struggle.
2. The Power Breath (1 Second)
This is the physiological "reset button." Take one deep, intentional "belly breath"—inhale sharply through the nose and perform a long, forceful exhale through the mouth. This specific breathing pattern stimulates the vagus nerve, which tells your parasympathetic nervous system to kick in. It lowers your heart rate and prevents that feeling of panic that leads to a "blow-up."
3. The Focus Pivot (1 Second)
Look back at the equipment and pick one—and only one—technical cue. Don't think about the score or the missed rep. Think about "elbows high" or "hips back." Just like picking a target on the fairway, you are narrowing your focus to a single, executable task.
In this moment, I also want you to visualise the successful rep. In golf, a pro sees the ball's flight path and the landing spot before they ever take their stance. In the box, you should see that bar path or that perfect landing on the box in your mind's eye. By seeing the win before you move, you move from a state of doubt into a state of execution. You are now ready for the next rep.
Managing the Internal Narrative
The "Next Rep" reset is about taking the lead in your own story. During a workout, your internal narrative dictates your physical output. If you are telling yourself "I'm failing because I got a no-rep," your body will follow that signal and shut down.
The reset allows you to interrupt that negative loop. It's a moment of Mindset discipline. At CrossFit Chiltern, our professional coaches are trained to spot when an athlete is "spiralling" and give them the cue to reset. We want you to be the athlete who is unfazed by the chaos of the clock. In the 2026 Open, the person who can reset the fastest is the one who will climb the leaderboard.
Skill Under Stress
One of the core tenets of our "Growth Engine" is the ability to perform skills under stress. Anyone can hit a perfect golf shot on the driving range, and anyone can move well when their heart rate is 100. The "Chiltern Athlete" is the one who can move well and stay calm when their heart rate is 175 and the pressure is on.
By practicing the reset during our daily classes, you are building the mental "muscle" needed for life's challenges. Whether it's a difficult meeting at work or a stressful situation at home, the ability to take three seconds, breathe, and pivot your focus is a life-changing skill. We aren't just training you for the gym; we are training you for the "Unknown and Unknowable" demands of the real world.
The Ignite Framework: Resilience and Recovery
Your ability to perform a "Next Rep" reset is deeply tied to your baseline resilience. This is where our Ignite Nutrition Programme becomes essential. We look at how the "Sleep" and "Stress" pillars influence your ability to stay calm under pressure.
A body that is chronically over-stressed from a poor lifestyle has a "hair-trigger" nervous system. If you are running on four hours of sleep, your brain will stay in "survival mode" because it doesn't have the resources to regulate itself. You'll find it impossible to find the composure needed for a 3-second reset.
We work with our members to build the biological resilience that allows for these mental breakthroughs. We want you to be the athlete who is "Cool, Calm, and Collected" even when the workout is a nightmare. By aligning your nutrition and recovery with your training, you give yourself the biological "budget" to stay present, reset when needed, and finish strong.
